GoGoX Live Activity

Track orders everywhere with Dynamic Island

GoGoX (also known as GoGoVan) is a truck and van hailing service in Hong Kong, Singapore and Vietnam. People use it for everything from picking up furniture, to film crews moving equipment between shoots, to companies hauling pallets of cargo.

Our customers often multitask during pickups. We wanted to keep them informed even when other apps are in the foreground.

Our customers also demand it. Local ride hailing and delivery apps, such as Uber and Keeta, make use of this capability. We wanted to bring the same level of transparency to cargo transportation.

MVP: Most Valuable Pixels

Overview of all Live Activity surfaces: iOS minimal, compact, expanded, and lock screen views alongside Android status bar chip and notification

On iOS, Live Activities have four states: compact, minimal, and expanded on the Dynamic Island, plus a separate lock screen view.

Compact is the default, minimal appears when multiple activities are active, and a long press expands the island. Most apps keep the expanded and the lock screen designs consistent.

On Android, Live Updates use predefined slots. The persistent status bar chip shows a single word. The update notification shows a title, subtitle, small square image, and progress bar.

Space is tight, so every pixel is valuable. Only essential information belongs here.

Compact and minimal Dynamic Island views explorations

Orders still being matched needed to show this status even in the minimal view. It had to mean “finding” across three regions.

A radar icon didn’t travel well culturally. Our mascot holding a magnifying glass didn’t scale down well to such a small size. I went with the magnifying glass with radar. It clearly reads as “finding” while indicating the search is still ongoing.

Design explorations for the en route expanded and compact Live Activity, showing rejected concepts with ETAs, multi-stop progress bars, and driver names alongside the final design featuring the license plate

I explored dozens of designs for the en route state. With research and user tests, I found the license plate number to be the most valuable.

Typical ride apps lead with driver names and progress bars, but van hailing is different.

Our customers are often businesses booking for colleagues who handle the loading. They need to tell their team which vehicle to find the most. In Hong Kong’s dense industrial zones where dozens of vans line the streets, a plate number is far more useful.

I decided to only have a simple, status-based progress bar. We support up to ten stops, and the dots created too much visual noise. Driver check-ins were also not reliable enough to make the indicator accurate.

The design adapts to license plate colour and length in Hong Kong, Singapore and Vietnam.

Three expanded Dynamic Island states showing how left and right elements maintain their position from the compact view across finding a driver, en route, and arrived drop-off

On iOS, left and right elements stay on the same side when the Dynamic Island expands. This way, customers don’t need to relearn the layout, making the transition feel natural and less discombobulated.
